Digital Quicksand Exercise
For You: The Distraction Defense System
- Map Your Mental Quicksand: List your top five distraction triggers during quiet moments (e.g., phone notifications, email alerts, mental to-do lists, nearby devices). Rate each 1–10 for how often it derails your stillness attempts.
- The Twenty-Minute Fortress: Create one completely distraction- free zone for twenty minutes this week. Turn devices completely off (not just silenced), remove visual triggers, and sit with whatever comes up. Note: The goal isn’t perfect stillness; it’s practicing non-reaction to distractions.
Your Team: Collective Boundary Setting
- Team Distraction Inventory: Have everyone anonymously share their top three workplace distractions. Create a team map of shared distraction patterns and collectively choose one to address (like notification-free focus blocks or device-free meeting periods).
- The Unreachable Experiment: Challenge the team to establish one hour per week when everyone is simultaneously “unreachable”— no Slack, email, or instant responses. Start small and track what happens during these protected periods compared to fears about what might happen.
