The Periscope Effect
For You: Predicting Your Overwhelm
- Overwhelm Patterns: Map your personal and professional overwhelm triggers. When do they typically occur? (Examples could be holidays, work cycles, life transitions.) What early warning signs can you identify before you're fully underwater?
- Your Overwhelm Signature: What does overwhelm look like specifically for you? More TV, less exercise? More scrolling, less listening? Create a personal “overwhelm inventory” of the behaviors, thoughts, and physical sensations that signal you're moving toward overwhelm.
Your Team: Creating Overwhelm Awareness
- Organizational Overwhelm Audit: Assess your team’s overwhelm patterns. What systemic factors (unclear priorities, understaffing, broken processes, etc.) contribute to overwhelm in your organization? When does your team collectively struggle most?
- Leadership Alignment Check: Examine the gap between what you say and what you model. Where might your actions be contributing to team overwhelm despite good intentions? How can you better align your leadership behavior with the spaciousness you want to create?
