The Cathedral Effect Exercise
For You: Space-Mind Connection Mapping
- Your Inspiration Geography: During the next week, track when and where you feel most creative or get your best ideas. Note elements such as ceiling height, lighting, clutter level, indoor/outdoor, time of day. What patterns emerge in your optimal thinking environments?
- The Five-Minute Space Shift: Choose one regular thinking task (e.g., planning your day, problem-solving, creative work) and experiment with doing it in three different environments this week. Notice: How does your thinking change in a cluttered space compared to a clear one? Near a window vs. away from it? In your usual spot or somewhere new?
Your Team: Strategic Space Design
- Meeting Environment Audit: For the next month, alternate your strategic meetings between different spaces— conference room vs. outdoor space, high-ceiling area vs. typical meeting room, well-lit vs. dimly lit spaces. Track the quality of ideas and engagement in each setting.
- The Cathedral Meeting: Plan your next big-picture session (e.g., strategic planning, vision work, problem-solving) intentionally. Choose the most spacious, light- filled location available. Compare the outcomes to similar meetings held in typical conference rooms— what differences do you notice in creativity and scope of thinking?
