Quieting the Judge Exercise
For You: The Judge Detection System
- Physical Early Warning Signs: Identify your body’s specific signals when the Judge arrives (e.g., tight shoulders, stomach knots, racing heart). Practice a thirty-second body scan during stillness activities to catch the Judge before they fully take over.
- The Friend Filter Practice: When you catch judgmental thoughts during stillness time, immediately ask: “Would I say this to my best friend?” If the answer is no, respond with a compassionate reframe: “I’m learning,” or “This is enough,” or “I’m exactly where I need to be.”
Your Team: Creating Judge-Free Zones
- The Perfectionism Audit: In your next team meeting, have everyone write down one work activity where their inner Judge is loudest (e.g., presentations, client calls, creative work). Identify patterns and normalize the experience— most people will discover they’re not alone in their self-criticism.
- Practice Rounds Protocol: For high-stakes activities where the Judge typically shows up (e.g., big presentations, difficult conversations), create “practice rounds” where the explicit goal is experimentation, not perfection. Debrief what people noticed about their internal dialogue when the pressure to be perfect is removed.
