Meditation 101 Exercises
For You: Your Stillness Starter Kit
- The Five-Minute Experiment: Try three different stillness approaches this week (e.g., traditional sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful listening). Spend five minutes with each and note which feels most natural. There’s no wrong choice— you’re building your personal stillness portfolio.
- The Ripple Watch: During any stillness practice, when thoughts arise, practice the “bridge over the stream” technique. Simply notice each thought like it’s a leaf floating by without trying to grab it. After the exercise, track how many “leaves” passed in five minutes. Do they slow down over time?
Your Team: Stillness Integration
- Meeting Meditation Trial: Introduce sixty seconds of silent presence at the start of three consecutive team meetings. Frame it as “arriving in the room together.” After the trial, gather honest feedback: What did people notice about their focus and presence, and the quality of the meeting?
- The Wandering Mind Normalize: In your next team check-in, ask everyone to share their biggest distraction during focused work time. Then explain that meditation research shows that the wandering mind is normal— noticing and returning builds the skill. This reassures team members who think they’re “bad” at stillness.
