The Collective Spark Exercises
For You: Community Mapping
- Your Connection Audit: List the communities where you currently feel genuine belonging (e.g., work teams, hobby groups, faith communities, volunteer organizations). Next to each, note what specific elements make you feel safe to be authentic— shared values, vulnerability, acceptance, common purpose?
- The Belonging Gap: Identify one area of your life where you wish you felt more connected to community. What’s one concrete step you could take this month to either deepen an existing connection or explore a new community that aligns with your values or interests?
Your Team: Building Community Through Service
- Values-Based Volunteering: Ask team members to share causes or organizations they care about. Look for overlap and plan a quarterly team volunteer day with an organization that reflects shared values. Focus on the collective impact rather than team building for its own sake.
- The Safety Check: During your next team meeting, ask, “When do you feel most able to be authentic and contribute your best thinking here?” and “What would make our team feel more like the kind of community where people can forget about protecting themselves and focus on the work?” Use responses to identify specific changes that could increase psychological safety.
